Our
history
John XXIII Educational Center opened its doors in the fall of 2009 with a mission to prepare students for graduation with the necessary skills for success in the workplace and in higher education. The Center’s name was chosen due to Pope John 23's advocacy for quality education for all God’s children with a strong belief that education is the foundation for creating a world of peace and love. Our high school graduates have reached a milestone in their life-long educational journey that gives them a beacon of hope and a path to a successful future.

In Memory of Co-Founder Shirley F. Heck (1935–2025)
Shirley Frances Heck was a lifelong educator, community leader, and co-founder of John XXIII Educational Center. A Racine native, she began her career as a Dominican nun and later earned her Doctorate of Education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison before becoming a professor at Ohio State University. She also founded the Discovery School in Mansfield, Ohio, which continues to thrive 50 years later.
After retiring and returning to Racine, Shirley volunteered countless hours to establish John XXIII Educational Center with Father Ricardo Martin. She served as the Volunteer Executive Director from 2009 to 2014 and later as Volunteer Director of Development, securing vital funding and community support. Her unwavering belief in every student — especially those facing challenges — helped shape the heart and mission of the organization.
Shirley is remembered not only for her leadership, but for her kindness, generosity, and deep love for family and community. Her legacy lives on in the many students whose lives were transformed by her vision.
