 Mentoring

Coming Spring 2025

John 23's Afterschool program offers students the opportunity to request a mentor. A mentor is an adult who works one-on-one with a student on academics, goals, and personal development.

Tutoring

John 23 supervised study hall is supported by community members who volunteer their time and share their skills and talents with John 23 students. Tutors are proficient in at least one core subject, and they assist students in completing homework assignments and understanding basic academic concepts.

 Thriving Thursdays

Thriving Thursdays are designed to help students thrive as they build on the foundation of their future. Enriching educational activities are provided to make learning fun and engaging while preparing students with intellectual, social, emotional and life skills that will benefit them in middle school, high school, and beyond.

rEADING bUDDIES

Reading Buddies is a program in which two individuals read together in their classroom during homework help. A Reading Buddies program can help model good reading.

Reading to young children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language. It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to learn about new subjects in school.

Juntos

The Juntos Program is open to families with middle school students. This program called Juntos—which translates to "together" in Spanish—helps Latinx students succeed academically. Parents and kids can both benefit from this program in their quest for academic success. You might think it's too early to start thinking about college, but it can be a useful tool for children and parents to use to achieve in their educational endeavors.

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS

John 23 Educational Center's Afterschool program offers a supervised study hall, in which students can receive academic help in all subject areas, so that they can grow and thrive as lifelong learners while reaching their full academic and human potential. The high school program focuses on helping students stay on track for graduation and creating a plan for after graduation.

Thriving Thursdays provide high school students engaging educational activities that will sharpen their skills and enrich them intellectually, socially and emotionally. J23 helps students to explore a variety of college and career paths by inviting business leaders, entrepreneurs, college representatives, community members and career professionals to visit the center and share their experiences of what led them to where they are today. Allowing students to have a glimpse into future possibilities challenges them to set goals and build their confidence in believing they can accomplish what they set out to do.

High school students are encouraged to be part of Still Growing where they have a chance to connect with their peers while gaining life skills as they adopt a growth mindset. This group will work on developing critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills while maintaining mental wellness as they navigate life changes.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS

The middle school program focuses on building up students' literary and math skills, and helping students get ready for high school. It also helps them to start thinking about higher education, and to build teamwork and resiliency skills. We offer a Reading Buddies program for middle school students to help model good reading and build language skills.

Thriving Thursdays are special days for middle school students filled with exciting and fun learning activities. J23 wants to help students learn about many different jobs they could have when they're older. They bring in a variety of people like business leaders, creative entrepreneurs, college representatives, people from the community, and professionals. These visitors come to J23 and talk about how their stories of how they got to where they are now. When students hear these stories, they start thinking about what they might want to do an in the future. This helps students set goals for themselves and believe they can succeed in whatever they choose to do.

One of the opportunities we offer students is the Countdown to College program, a partnership with St. Mary's University in Winona, MN. This is available to qualified eighth grade students. Students selected for this program must maintain their grades and attend a 2-week summer course at St. Mary's every summer. Students who successfully complete the program may apply for the first generation college student scholarship.
